Are Aspies nocturnal or something?

Q:My Aspie just cannot go to sleep; can you suggest any strategies that worked for you or those that are unique? I have tried most run of the mill techniques.

A: A lot of Aspies have really weird natural sleep cycles. My friend Lui sleeps for about 6 hours of every 48. I don't know any Aspie-specific tricks for getting to sleep, if it's a real problem I would recommend going to a sleep therapist. By the time they're older, most Aspies reach some sort of equilibrium where they might not be sleeping at the same times as everybody else, but they're getting the amount they need. One thing that's important to look at is the difference between insomnia, when the kid is trying to sleep and can't, and simple not being sleepy. If it's insomnia, I would definately ask your pediatrician for help/referral to a sleep specialist. But if your child just isn't sleepy, I say let him read quietly in his room until he is.
