Potty Training
Q: I just discovered you guys and I'm
excited! I'm mom to a great 8.9 yo non-verbal boy with autism. We
have lots of issues, not the least of which is consistent use of the
potty.
We are sometimes successful with
#1....but only if I guess in advance when he will need to go.....but he
absolutely refuses to poop in the pot. What's up with that?
Thanks
Peg P
A: I don't really remember anything about being potty trained, so I don't
know if I had problems with it or not. But I have heard from other
autistics I know that they didn't like the feeling of empty space under
their buttocks. Perhaps if you could find a toilet seat with a
particularly wide brim, so that as much of his rear end was supported
as possible, he'd be more open to the idea. That's really the only
thing I can think of.
Best of luck,
Wiley

My son had to be...well..SHOWN. He is a visual learner. He had no idea why dad sat on the toilet until my husband...welll...SHOWED him.
Then he gave us this look like DUH! Why didn't you show me this earlier and you could have saved a ton of money on diapers!
